So, if God didn't create life, what do you believe happened that life began?

I believe in creationism but I really would like to know what people who don't believe in God think. I also would like to know why, if man evolved from ape....why do apes still exist and why are there no intermediary species between man and ape...let's say a talking ape? It's not my intention to make fun of anyone's theory, I just need some help understanding. Thanks
