First visit to Australia, need ideas.?

I plan on visiting Australia for the first time in my life. Give me idea of things to do and what not to miss. Where can I see and get near the popular wildlife? Any frugal ideas on how to make it a trip of a lifetime? Not to be cliche' but I'd really like to be up close with koalas and kangaroos, etc.
