Were the actions the US took against Syria justified?

Apparently we killed 8 civilians in Syria? I'm not sure if this is the truth, but Syria is very pissed off at the US right now. Was our deadly raid justified, or do they have a good reason to have almost 10 thousand people protesting against us?
