Whats an explanation of why people believed that Gandhi was an important figure in global history?

Gandhi has influenced every form of protest world wide for nearly a century. Every protest, from MLK to the egyptian protest of late have been influenced in some way by gandhi. He also really caused the death of the imperial age by beginning the process that eventually lead to decolonization.
