What happened after Gandhi died?

I don't know for sure--but after he made his historic long walk to the sea to scoop up FREE SALT--something that the British had taxed the Indians on, this seemed to break the hold of the British Empire in that country. Later, a Muslim, I think, shot and killed him. One of the Greatest human beings in the world.
